Goodbyes {Nearly Forgotten Faces of Good Friends, or Fan Art Friday}

Two top photos:
Today is a different kind of  "fan art friday."
And yes, I know it's not Friday....but pretend it is.
This fan art is made after people in my life--a few of the many that were dear friends to me while I was living in Seattle.
 I haven't seen them in about a week and a half and I was starting to forget their faces, so I painted them from memory.

Bottom photo:
Sidewalk chalk art by Allison Lippert (a very skilled 11-year-old artist) and myself at the family dinner program Friday night held in celebration of my younger sister's marriage!
My sister is said to have the personality of Rapunzel and Thomas the personality of the Blue Power Ranger. At the dinner, they were each prompted with questions and were to answer in the character of each personality respectively. It was such fun! :)

Lots of changes are going on in my life right now--My sister is married, my brother is graduated from high school, and I'm leaving on my mission for a year and a half.
 It's starting to hit me. I hate goodbyes.

I'm Going Away For A Year-and-a-Half {A Somewhat Brief Explanation}

(But don't worry, my sister Sierra will be posting on my behalf as I am away, and this is not the last post I will be making today)

This is old news for some of you.
But I must say to the rest of you---I'm really sorry to spring this on you all at once, dearest ones. . . but I just wanted to get it over with quick, like ripping off a band-aid.

I am going AWAY.
Like, away away.
From Tumblr and Blogger and Facebook.

Why am I going away? And where to?

Well, my Dear Family, Casual Followers, Avid Readers/Viewers, Supporters, Friends, and Fellow Artists, I have decided to serve as a Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (also known as the Mormon Church). We are most commonly referred to as the Mormon Church because we believe the Book of Mormon as well as the Bible to be the Word of God.
I have been called to serve in Federal Way, Washington from August 2013 to February 2015.
I leave this Wednesday. So, tomorrow.

I want to be clear about one thing before I proceed: I do not wish to force my beliefs on you.
Honestly--I just feel like I owe you guys an explanation after your tremendous support and kindness.

Some of you may not know what this means---this "mission" thing.

At first I wrote up this detailed three-page-long description of the process of getting a mission call and preparing to serve a mission and so on.
...But a lot of us these days have the attention span of a gnat and can't read three pages without falling asleep (and by "a lot of us" I mean me. ESPECIALLY ME).

Here is what it means to me summed up in one word: Sacrifice.

Missionaries sacrifice time away from their families.
They put their education and careers on the back burner to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
They have to give up listening to certain types of music that take away from a peaceful mindset, using the computer for things other than emailing family, and some other materialistic things.
They hand over their lives to God and teach his Word: That God is our Father and he loves us, and that Jesus is our Savior.
They willingly give up focusing on whatever passions or hobbies they might have to serve God and bring happiness to people.

There are lots of other things that LDS Missionaries are asked to sacrifice temporarily, but all that is sacrificed is matched or even doubled in exchange for great learning experiences.

I was recently accepted into the Illustration BFA at my university and it will be a definite sacrifice to leave such awesome people and opportunities behind, even if it is only temporarily.
My biggest passions are people and art, but I don't actually have to give up doing art while I am on my mission, but I do have to give up making it a central part of my life so I channel that focus toward God and others.

My personal Testimony:

More about the LDS Church, Missions, and Beliefs:

Again-- Because I will be serving this mission, I will not personally be able to post art updates. HOWEVER, I will be able to email my family pictures of any artwork I might have time to make and they will be able to do that for me. ( How nice of them! :) )
That means that this blog will still be alive! :)

Bird of the Summer {Brave Fan Art}

I've had a hankering to draw Merida from Brave for over a year and a half. Finally did!
Thought it would be a good opportunity to try a different, more detailed painting style.

I know I said last post that in my next post I would do something with a background. . .
. . . this is the next post and there's no background . . .
. . .but at least I put a shadow in! That's background enough, right?

Yellow Red Sparks {Summer Sketch Sessions}

Hey! Still working on commissions. A little behind because first it was my birthday and I went on adventures, then I got a little sick and slept more than usual.
Such is life. . . but all is well!
The majority of these people are based on people I have been seeing around.
My favorite person I saw is the little girl in the hat with a  "sun allergy." I saw her among swimsuit-clad kids at the Seattle Center fountain. She was COMPLETELY shielded from the sun except for her hands. I don't know if it's a fact that she's allergic to the sun, but I really want her to be because I think that's interesting and endearing...in a weird way.
I have more sketches that I am in the process of coloring!

SOMEDAY I'll finish one of my ideas with a background...Goal: next blog post.

Ventura Highway {Hey Ho, Tokyo!}

Blog banner of a Sister missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As you can see, she was called to the Japan Tokyo Mission. :) She's got a cute blog she's keeping while she goes on her adventure.
 I had a ton of fun making this, any my friend that commissioned it is SO darling and sweet.

I'm into this stuff:
Golden Slumbers - The Beatles
Ventura Highway - America
Morning Thought - Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
Ragged Wood - Fleet Foxes
Yeah Yeah - Willy Moon

I'll Run {Hi, I'm alive}

So, I've been SUPER busy with commissions. They keep rolling in.
 I'm still living in Seattle with my aunt and uncle, and will be here until late August working--doing ART work, that is.
These past couple weeks have been very eventful and I've been blessed with a full schedule of art-doing and music-listening. I have LOTS to post, but unfortunately I don't have time to post anything other than this right now.
Love you guys. Thanks for your support.

Words Gone {City Girl}

I'm living in Seattle right now with my dear Auntie and Uncle.
Basically it was a weekend visit that turned into a month and then some.
 It's THE most beautiful place on the planet
and they sell the most heavenly fruit here. And I'm ALL about fruit.

 I have a lot to post, I promise. And I know I keep on saying that but I keep starting things, getting ADD, and end up starting on something else.
So for now, here's a sketch of a girl I saw standing
at a crosswalk in the city.

Happy Mother's Day!

(done in gouache paint)

When I was really young (like eight years old) I'd always ask my
mom to draw all 150 Pokemon for me, and she'd do it so willingly.
Best mom ever, right?
I always wanted to be as good at drawing as she was when I grew up!
You've been such a good example and support to me my whole life.
I love you, momma.

P.S. My nineteen-year-old sister likes to draw what I draw sometimes.
And it's beautiful.
{I think I need to put her art up here more often.}

All Night {House Sketches}

Some houses out of my head just because...houses.

Admittedly, the treehouse one was kinda inspired by Tarzan. I've watched that movie four times in the past week and a half. It's such a beautiful and vibrant movie! One of my favorites, to be sure!

These and more sketches have just been sitting in my sketchbook for over a week--I just haven't gotten around to posting them.
There were some expected events that came up in my life that had to take precedence over blog posts!
But now I have a little more time, so expect my regular two posts a week from here on out :)

Just a few of my several favorite tunes to listen to in these past couple weeks:

Oh, P.S., if you guys didn't hear, I had the honor of being accepted into the Illustration BFA Concept Track! I have a lot I need to learn and I can't wait to work with such a talented faculty.
 Just one step closer to living the dream!

The Cliff Waltz {majorly reworked forest painting}

So... I completely reworked one of the forest speed paintings I did because it just didn't quite feel right, kind of like I had my shoes on the wrong feet and my pants were on backwards.
There was more to the Story of the Forest that I needed to communicate, so here's the edit to one of my pieces since a couple blog posts ago.

Some good tunes:

Bloom {Forest Speed Paint}

I just love the forest and hiking. I can't wait until it gets warm more consistently so I can go on adventures!

Here are some practice speed paint sketches.  I don't usually do landscapes. Still learning! :)

Here; have some upbeat tunes:

Chaos! {Digital and Sketchbook Update}

My life is still really chaotic! Getting ready to apply for the Illustration BFA next Wednesday. I am scrambling to make some good art in time to submit my application.

Good news:
1) I got the only piece I submitted last minute in to the BYU Student Annual Show
2) I AM STILL ALIVE and I will be DONE applying for the BFA in 7 days.

I Can Never Relax [Sketchbook Update]

Been really busy! I feel like I can never relax...(Blog title brought to you by Hellogoodbye)
I have a lot of digital works in progress that I will upload when they are complete, but here is some sketchbook for now. :)
Been at the studio working about 14 hours a day preparing for the BFA Application in two weeks.

Go Do. [sketchbook]

So, outside of the studio the other day there was a
group of theatre kids dancing
and stuff. I drew a couple of them.
This girl wasn't actually wearing this outfit, but I thought
 she woulda been a cute ballerina.
I always see this tall dude on campus that reminds
me a little of my brother, but I don't know his name.
I'll ask him next time I see him, I think!

Shelf butt old lady with beautiful hair! She was so kindly looking.
And then there were a couple of ladies with
short, curled hair that made such energetic lines. Had to draw 'em!
Here are a few sketches from a few days ago of people I saw on campus and some birdies.

My favorite song for the past couple days
has been "Go Do" by Jonsi. It's so motivating and happy! Have a listen.

Our Futures Were Written With Crayons In Coloring Books

Here is the original sketch from my sketchbook.

I wanted to try something in black and white in photoshop for a little bit of value practice, so here is a sketch I colored.
...or blackandwhited.
Or whatever.
This little girl saw that her dad was zonked out on the couch after a long day at work, so she decided to make a pretty picture for him to surprise him when he'd wake.

The title of this blog is brought to you by "Next to Me" by Sleeping at Last
Other songs I have been listening to lately:

Sorry, guys--I was supposed to post this over the weekend, but I was busy with some fun plans and CRUD LOADS of school work.
I went to see Imagine Dragons with a close friend and it was awesome. We weren't too close to the front and I only had my phone camera, but here's a picture from our adventure!

Atlas Genius opened for them. I like them, too -- Check 'em out!

The Myth of Youth

Some heads that are based on some girls I saw on campus
Here is a little bit of my process:

First, I do really messy sketches.
Then I do really messy paint to figure out the colors I'm gonna use.
Then I clean up the shapes, get rid of the line work and paint in the shadows and highlights.
And here are the portraits in B&W for fun!

So here's the thing--I am not very good at coming up with titles, so I'm leaving it up to the music I have recently listened to to name my blog posts.

Here are a few songs I've listened to lately:
