Wandering Back [Granny]

A quick painting of a granny enjoying the brisk weather. Sure, she looks like a pretty generic granny. However, I'd like to think that she has a fascination with all animals... but with fish in particular. Her whole house is basically a giant aquarium. I am working on developing this character further and designing what her home would look like. For fun.
Sometimes when I walk around observing people and the grocery store or whatever, I wonder what kind of life they live. Like, where do they live? What's their story? What makes them mad? Etc. A totally random, normal-looking person could have some wack aquarium house. You never know.

Have some music

Greenleaf [Sketchbook Update]

Here are some of my recent sketches and a planner cover that I painted with gouache for an LDS missionary I served with in Washington.
Also, I'm on Instagram now. You can follow me if you desire (karlyjadec).

I've Got This Friend [The Love Triangle in my Sketchbook]

I'd like to think that there's a little love triangle going on here in my sketchbook. My sister named the guy on top "Duncan Farlobe" and the girls have yet to be named--- but we'll call the girl in braids "Red" and the girl with the red puffy jacket "Gina" for now. Long story short,  Duncan has a crush on Gina and Red has a crush on Duncan and Gina doesn't even care about boys and love and stuff. She just likes snowball fights and finger painting (yes, finger painting. Even though she's like 11 years old).

So Now What? [Ink Doodles]

I've never worked in ink before. So I tried it!
It scares me because it's so permanent, but I guess it's good practice not using an undo button and work through mistakes.

Music. Because reasons.

Love and Some Verses [People in Love & Stuff]

A little bit of process figuring out elements, color, and composition. I still have a hard time figuring out how elements of a drawing communicate best together. D'aw well. This is why I am going to school!

More to come later on. I've got LOADS MORE of couple-y commissions to do! :)
For now, here is some music that I like.

The Stardust of a Song [Light & Color]

I'm trying to get better at understanding color and light. I'm also trying to establish a style while exploring different ways of painting. So I made this!
She reminds me of a version of Alice or of Sandra Templeton from Big Fish.
Here's a little bit of my process. And I mean a very little bit.
Diggin' the oldies lately.

Golden Light For Miles [Summer Longboarding]

No, I don't longboard. But if I did, I wouldn't look like this; I would look VERY troubled. I have the balance of . . . something that doesn't have very good balance.
But I do like watching people who enjoy longboarding.
Did this on my ten-minute break at workies the other day.
She's squinting because it's dusty outside. Also, because she is content and stuff.
Trying to clear her mind and take it easy.

Also, I did this word thing for a Spanish Speaking Sister Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
She's my roommate's sister and it was her little welcome home sign at the airport!
It was fun. I love painting.

To Whom It May Concern [Commissions & Some Etceteras]

I tried keeping loose with some word art things.
The quote about love is by Zora Neale Hurston. Favorite.
I made a banner for my friend's website. She is an AMAZING seamstress and fashion designer. Her clothes are to DIE for! Check her out.
Here are some ideas/process of making the banner.
More to come later.

Some songs I like as of late:

Youth [Self Portrait & Stuff]

Self portrait. Because I haven't done a proper one since I was, like, eight (proper being a fluid concept in this case), and because I need practice, and because other reasons.

I'll probably either add more to this post later or...just make a new post. Whatever. New art will be coming soon. Commissions or what have you.

Oh, and sometimes I draw little things for my cousins at family dinners. Often I forget to take pictures, but here are some things.

Some music that I've been diggin' on. Enjoy.

Be My Honeypie {Married People Are Cute}

One of my beautiful friends got married last weekend and she asked me to do a
little cartoon-y portrait of her and her husband! They are so cute. I really enjoyed doing this.
Done digitally, printed out, and then did some details in Gouache.

Me and my friend, Stephanie, at her beautiful reception :)

Some music that makes me happy:

Gathering Stories {Things Learned}

So, I recently returned home from my LDS mission to Washington. For those of you who don’t know much about missions, here’s a sum of what it’s all about: Helping people BECOME by helping them draw nearer unto Christ.
At the first of my mission, I had a hard time transitioning because there was virtually no time for myself. On a mission, one is constantly seeking to help others. I had a hard time balancing between who I am as an artist and who I was as a missionary. I didn’t know if I would ever find a way to incorporate my artistic abilities into my missionary work.
Then I realized that as an illustrator, I see the world differently—see people differently. As soon as I recognized that, I was able to help people BECOME more effectively.
People are so much more than planes and 3D shapes to be translated into lines on paper— each person has a story to tell, places to go, and people to become. Each person is a character.
Each soul —each character— has Divine potential to BECOME. We are humans. We are living things. This means we can grow! :)
My intent as a human being is to see people, to see beyond the lines and shapes & to sense what their souls are feeling. I want to reach within myself to help them BECOME—to help them find their happy forevers.
I want to know their stories. I want to know about their well-worn favorite pair of shoes. I want to know about their first day of elementary school. I want to know about their heartbreaks. I want to know how they have overcome those heartbreaks. I want to know how they ended up crossing paths with me.
I want to gather those stories— learn from them, bask in their originality, cry & laugh & feel so deeply along with the people.
This post contains sketches based on a few of the many people I have met on my mission. Without these people (and people in general), my life would have no flavor.
Actually… I don’t know if I would actually BE at all.
People make up who I am —- who WE are.
We are all libraries of experience & emotion. As we live, we loan & borrow & steal & give from the libraries within ourselves and within others. In these exchanges, we BECOME.
We connect.
(*Pocahontas moment* we are all connected to each other in a circle, in a hoop that never eeeeeends!)
We disconnect.
We feel.
We build ourselves.
The more involved we are with helping others BECOME, the more we come into contact with our ACTUAL individual souls—our Characters at the core. As a result, we begin to live more consciously. We delight in recognizing the often overlooked details of each Character we meet &we develop a greater love for life.
I grew a lot on my mission, and I know that I have A LOT more growing to do. I want to thank all of you for teaching me various things by being who you are. You each of you is worth so much more than you know. I promise. So, love yourself.
*Lion King Moment* Remember who you are…Reeemeeemmberrr…Reeememberrr.
ALL the love!
Karly Jade

Here is some happy music to listen to, my dear friends:
